As the Advent season approaches, many of us long to slow down, quiet our hearts, and reflect on the hope that came into the world through the birth of Jesus. Advent Bible verses are a beautiful way to prepare our spirits for Christmas, helping us remember that we are not just counting down to a holiday, but to the arrival of our Savior…

Our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace ❤️

In this post, we’ll walk through powerful Advent Bible verses that point us toward Jesus, fill our days with peace and joy, and remind us of God’s promises. You can read them daily, reflect on them weekly, or use them to create your own Advent reading plan or scripture countdown calendar.

Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival.” In the Christian faith, it is a season of preparation, reflection, and joyful expectation as we remember the birth of Jesus Christ and anticipate His promised return.

Traditionally, the Advent season begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day and leads us through several weeks of reflection that center around hope, peace, joy, and love.

From the very beginning, God’s people lived in expectation of the Messiah. The Old Testament is filled with prophecies of a Savior who would bring great light to a land of deep darkness (Isaiah 9:2), a promise fulfilled in the birth of Jesus, the Son of God and Prince of Peace.

Advent draws our hearts back to those promises and invites us to prepare room for Jesus once again.

Today, Advent matters just as much as it did centuries ago. In a world that prizes being busy and is full of noise and distractions, the Christmas season calls us to pause and intentionally reflect on God’s hope-filled plan of redemption.

Whether you walk through Advent with candles, scripture readings, family devotionals, or quiet prayer, each moment reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world, and His presence brings everlasting hope.

How to Use Advent Bible Verses During the Season

Advent Bible verses are more than traditional readings, they are invitations to slow down, reflect on God’s promises, and draw closer to Jesus day by day. Whether you walk through Advent alone, with your children, or alongside a small group, there are many meaningful ways to incorporate scripture into your daily rhythms.

Here are a few simple and meaningful ideas:

Create a daily Advent reading plan. Choose one verse or passage to read each day leading up to Christmas. You can follow a structured Advent reading plan, focus on Old Testament prophecies, or walk through the Christmas story from the Gospels.

Read scripture while lighting Advent candles. Many families use an Advent wreath with four candles, each one representing hope, peace, joy, and love. Reading corresponding Bible verses as you light each weekly candle creates a powerful rhythm of reflection and anticipation.

Use an Advent calendar with scripture. Instead of candy or surprises, incorporate a verse behind each day of an Advent calendar to keep the focus on Jesus and the hope that his birth brings.

Journal your reflections. Writing down how each verse speaks to you helps plant God’s truth deep in your heart. Consider journaling about moments of waiting, hope, or peace in your own life during this season.

Share readings as a family. Reading a short scripture verse with your children or during dinner can open up sweet opportunities to talk about Jesus, His birth, and why He came as the Savior of the world.

Pray through the verses. Use each Advent passage as a prompt for prayer, thanking God for hope, asking for peace, or inviting His joy into weary places.

Whether you choose a daily scripture lineup, weekly Advent themes, or a simple verse to meditate on, letting God’s Word guide your Advent journey helps you prepare your heart for the celebration of Jesus’ birth with deeper meaning and joy.

Best Advent Bible Verses About the Coming of Jesus (Prophecies from the Old Testament)

Long before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, God’s people were waiting for a promised Savior. One who would bring light, peace, and hope to a world covered in darkness. These Old Testament prophecies not only foretold His birth, but also revealed His identity as the Son of God, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

During the Advent season, reflecting on these prophetic scriptures helps us trace the story of God’s promises and see how beautifully they were fulfilled through Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6-7
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”

Isaiah 11:1-2
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him-the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord”

Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Isaiah 7:14
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

Isaiah 9:2
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”

Advent Bible Verses from the Christmas Story (Luke & Matthew)

The New Testament brings the fulfillment of the prophecies God’s people had waited centuries to see. Through the Gospel accounts of Matthew and Luke, we witness the birth of Jesus. The moment when the promised Son of God entered the world as our Prince of Peace.

These Advent Bible verses draw us into the story of faith, obedience, and divine glory that changed history forever.

Luke 1:26-28
“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Luke 1:30-33
“But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Matthew 1:20-23
“But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).”

Luke 2:1-7
“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”

Luke 2:8-11
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Luke 2:16-20
“So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.”

Advent Bible Verses for Hope and Peace

Advent is a season filled with expectation, not only of Christ’s birth but also of His presence in our lives today. In moments of waiting, weariness, or uncertainty, these Advent Bible verses remind us that Jesus is our hope and our Prince of Peace.

His light shines in dark places, His promises anchor our souls, and His peace guards our hearts even when the world feels restless.

Romans 15:13
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

John 8:12
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Isaiah 26:3
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Luke 2:14
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Titus 2:13
“While we wait for the blessed hope-the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Advent Bible Verses for Joy and Expectancy

Advent is not only a season of reflection; it is also a season of anticipation, a joyful waiting based on the certainty that Jesus has come and will come again. These Advent Bible verses speak to the deep joy that rises from hope fulfilled and the expectant faith that God’s promises never fail.

Luke 2:10
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.’”

Philippians 4:4
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

Isaiah 12:2-3
“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.”

Psalm 16:11
“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

1 Peter 1:8
“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy”

Advent Readings for Family and Children

Advent is a meaningful time to bring families together around God’s Word. Whether you have little ones asking questions about the Christmas story or older children beginning to understand the deeper meaning of Jesus’ birth, using Advent Bible verses as part of your family rhythm can create lasting memories rooted in faith. These moments of daily or weekly reflection help children understand who Jesus is and why His coming is worth celebrating with great joy.

Here are a few simple and meaningful ways to share Advent readings with your family:

1. Use an Advent calendar with scripture verses

Instead of gifts or candy, choose an Advent calendar that includes a Bible verse for each day leading up to Christmas. This keeps the focus on the birth of Christ and helps children anticipate each reading with excitement.

2. Read a short daily Bible passage at mealtime or bedtime

Even a few verses from the Gospels or an Old Testament prophecy can open the door for conversation about the hope and love Jesus brings. Consistency, not length, is what makes this meaningful.

3. Light Advent candles and read corresponding scripture

Each week, light a new candle that represents hope, peace, joy, or love. Read a passage that reflects that theme and talk about what it means for your family today.

4. Create a simple Advent reading plan together

Make a weekly list of scripture verses for your family to read and reflect on. If you enjoy structure, you can follow a printable reading plan or even assign older children to read aloud or share what a verse means to them.

5. Share readings with a small group or church family

Whether you gather in person or online, Advent scripture readings are a beautiful way to encourage one another and prepare your hearts together for the coming of Christ Jesus.

Advent readings don’t have to be complicated. Even simple moments, a short passage, a quiet prayer, a conversation about Jesus, can plant seeds of faith that grow over time. As you journey through the Advent season with your family, let scripture guide your hearts to the true meaning of Christmas.

Creating Your Own Advent Bible Reading Plan

Designing an Advent Bible reading plan can be a meaningful way to remain consistent in scripture during a season that is often busy and emotionally full. A reading plan helps you focus intentionally, whether you follow a daily scripture schedule or reflect on a different theme each week of Advent.

Here are a few simple ways to build your own Advent reading plan:

Choose the structure – daily or weekly

Some people prefer a daily Bible verse or short passage for each of the 24 days leading up to Christmas. Others follow the four traditional weeks of Advent, focusing on hope, peace, joy, and love.

Start with prophecy and move toward fulfillment

You might begin your Advent readings with Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah, such as the ones listed above. Then transition into Gospel passages from Matthew and Luke that tell the story of Jesus’ birth.

Include verses about hope, peace, joy, and love

These themes are central to the Advent season and can serve as anchors in your plan. Each week, choose scripture verses that reflect how Christ fulfills these promises.

If you’re looking for some verses to include in your Christmas cards this year, you’ll love my list of 30 Christmas Bible Verses for Holiday Cards.

Add reflection or journaling time

Consider writing a sentence or prayer after each reading. This helps move the verses from your head to your heart and deepens personal understanding.

Adapt for children or small groups

If you’re reading with family or a group, use shorter passages or highlight one key verse each day. Small group leaders may choose to discuss one Advent verse per session or pray through scripture together.

Whether your Advent reading plan is simple or structured, the goal is the same, to prepare your heart for the birth of Christ and anchor your hope in the promises of God. As you walk through each scripture reading, allow the Holy Spirit to fill your heart with wonder, peace, and joyful expectation.

Final Encouragement: Preparing Room in Your Heart for Christ

Advent is more than a countdown to Christmas. It’s a sacred opportunity to pause, reflect, and prepare room in our hearts for Jesus. As we walk through these Advent Bible verses, we are reminded that the birth of Jesus was not only a moment in history, but a powerful display of God’s love, faithfulness, and redemption for His people.

Jesus came as the Light of the World, bringing hope to those in darkness, peace to troubled hearts, joy in your grief, and love that reaches across every season of life. Just as generations once waited for the promised Messiah, we too are a people of expectation, trusting in His presence today and looking forward to His return with blessed hope.

Whether this season feels joyful, quiet, or heavy, the story of Advent assures us that God sees us, God is with us, and God is for us. As you reflect on these verses, may your heart be renewed with wonder, comforted by His promises, and filled with a fresh desire to draw nearer to Christ Jesus.
