Mother’s Day can feel like a beautiful celebration for many, but for a bereaved mother, it can be one of the hardest days of the year.

When you’ve experienced the loss of a child, this day doesn’t just come with flowers and cards. It comes with memories, longing, and a love that still has nowhere to go. You may find yourself caught between wanting to celebrate being a mother, but also just wanting to make it through the day.

After I lost my son, Sam, Mother’s Day was a tricky one. I had to try to figure out how to balance all sorts of emotions. Gratitude for the children I still have on this Earth, and extreme sadness for my son that is now in Heaven.

Mother’s Day can be a very difficult day to navigate through. Sometimes, it’s hard to find the right words for what your heart is carrying. That’s why I’ve gathered these bereaved Mother’s Day quotes. To give language to your grief, to honor your child, and to gently remind you that you are not alone in this grief journey you’re walking.

Whether you’re looking for something to reflect on, share on social media, or write in a card, I pray these words bring even the smallest sense of comfort to your heart today.

What Is International Bereaved Mother’s Day?

International Bereaved Mother’s Day is observed each year on the Sunday before Mother’s Day. It’s a day set aside to honor and acknowledge mothers who have experienced the loss of a child, no matter the age or circumstance.

For many mothers who have lost a child, traditional Mother’s Day can feel complicated. While it’s meant to be a day of celebration, it can also be a painful reminder of the emptiness that is left now that their child is in Heaven.

Bereaved Mother’s Day creates space for that grief to be seen and validated. A day that recognizes what everyone around you doesn’t see: there’s a child who’s not here physically, but one that you always carry in your heart.

Whether your child is in your arms or in Heaven, that bond does not disappear.

International Bereaved Mother’s Day is not about moving on or “finding closure.” It’s about honoring your child’s life, your love for them, and the lasting imprint they’ve left on your heart.

And if this day feels heavy for you, you’re not alone in that either.

A Gentle Reminder for Bereaved Mothers Today

If today feels heavy, I want to remind you of something your heart may already know, but needs to hear again: You are never alone.

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” -Psalm 34:18

Jesus is always with you. Through every tear, every cry, every moment you feel you can’t even get out of bed, he is right there with you.

He’s not scared of how big your emotions are. He’s not scared of how long it will take to heal your heart. He never grows weary and he never runs out of strength.

I’ve felt him pick me up and carry me so many times throughout my own grief journey. I’ve felt him lift that heavy burden off of me more times than I can count.

And the same Jesus that has walked with me (and is still walking with me) on my grief journey, is the same Jesus that will walk with you through yours.

Give yourself permission to feel all the emotions today:

You can grieve and love.
You can ache and remember.
You can honor your child while also wishing things were different.

There is no “right way” to walk through Mother’s Day after child loss. And each Mother’s Day might look different in how you’ll get through it.

So whether today looks like quiet reflection, tears, remembering, or even just getting through the day, that’s okay.

Conclusion

If today feels heavy, I hope these bereaved Mother’s Day quotes have reminded you of something your heart may have needed to hear: you are not alone.

Mother’s Day after the loss of a child is not simply a day of celebration. It’s a day filled with love, longing, and remembrance. And whatever you’re feeling today, give yourself permission to fully feel it. And then let Jesus help you through those emotions.

If one of these quotes spoke to your heart, you might consider saving it, writing it down, or sharing it with someone who understands. Sometimes the smallest words can bring the greatest comfort.

And if all you can do today is take a deep breath and make it through, that’s okay too.

I’m holding you in my heart today.
