Bible verses about peace in hard times

I’m no stranger to hard times. In 2017 we lost our 4-year-old son Sam. The road that I began walking that day was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through.

How in the world could I make it without my son?

There was only ONE way I could make it after losing my child – and that’s Jesus.

If that’s you, if you’re currently walking through a storm in your life, I pray that the peace of these verses will wash over your heart and strengthen your spirit to keep going.

What is peace?

Webster defines peace as “freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions”.

Have you ever been in a situation in your life that caused disquieting and oppressive thoughts? How about your emotions? Have you been in a situation that caused your emotions to be turned upside down?

I like to use the analogy of a storm to describe these moments in life.

Think of the last time you were in a heavy storm. The wind was howling, the rain was pouring, the thunder was deafening. A word you would not use to describe a storm like this is “quiet” or “calm”.

That’s exactly what happens when a “storm” hits our lives.

The kind of storm that completely obliterates every part of our life. How can we make it through something so devastating?

And how in the world can we experience peace in the middle of our storm? It seems impossible.

And yet that’s exactly what the peace of God can do for us. It can give us a sense of peace and calm, even when the storm is raging.

What kind of peace does Jesus give?

There are two types of peace that you can experience in this life:

>> Temporary peace
>> Lasting peace

Temporary peace is peace that you get from the things of this world. This peace, while you may feel it for a while, will eventually go away. It’s not lasting peace.

And when you’re going through a hard time in your life, you don’t want a peace that will eventually go away. You need a peace that will be with you every moment of this hard road you’re having to walk.

Lasting peace is the peace that hangs in there. Through all the ups and downs of this life. No matter what life throws at you, you can have the confidence that you can still experience peace.

And there’s only one way we can receive this kind of peace. The kind of peace that will stay with you no matter how hard the storm is raging in your life. The kind of peace that doesn’t make sense. And that is through Jesus.

He’s the source of our peace. He’s the source of our strength. He’s the only way we can make it through when life gets hard.

And he’s definitely the only one who can bring calm in the middle of our storm.

Where do we find this peace?

So how do we get this peace? How do we know where to find this peace?

That, my friends, is an easy one. We need to go to the source of all of the promises of God that we have for our lives…

His word.

The Bible is the ultimate source of truth. As Christians, we believe that the Bible is the actual word of God. It doesn’t change. The truths that are inside of those pages are constant. We can confidently build our lives on the truth that’s contained inside.

And one of the promises that’s inside the Bible that we can claim is the promise of peace. But not just any peace. HIS peace. A peace that lasts. A peace that will take all of the chaos and hurt and pain and replace it with a peace that will wash over our hearts and minds.

There was a movie that came out in the 90’s called Twister. It was about some storm chasers that chased tornadoes.

There was one time they couldn’t get away from the tornado fast enough, so they had to chain themselves to a pipe that went underground to keep from being picked up by the tornado.

As the tornado passed over them it was utter chaos. It was loud, the wind was blowing so hard, and then all of a sudden, they entered the center of the tornado and all the wind died down, the ear-piercing noise went away, and there was complete and utter peace.

THAT is the peace that we can receive in the middle of our storm. And these verses are HOW we can get it.
