The Christmas season can stir up both happiness and pain, especially when you’re grieving your child. Everywhere you look, there are reminders of joy, celebration, and togetherness. But at the same time, your heart carries a deep longing and a quiet sorrow that seems to just be louder during this time of year.
But even during all the pain that this season can bring, Jesus offers a joy that doesn’t depend on circumstances and a hope that reaches into the darkest places of your heart. His coming wasn’t just a moment in history. It was a promise that light still breaks through, even in the darkest of nights.
This month’s theme, “Joy and Hope in Jesus,” invites you to gently lift your eyes from the weight of your grief and remember the One who came to heal the brokenhearted.
Each scripture in this December Bible reading plan points you back to Jesus. Your Comforter, your steady Hope, and the One who promises joy that no one can take away.
As you move through this month, I pray you will find moments of quiet comfort, glimmers of joy, and renewed hope in the One who holds both you and your child in His perfect love.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13

A Prayer for December
Dear Jesus, this season feels tender, and my heart carries both joy and sorrow. Please fill me with Your hope and remind me that true joy is found in You alone. Help me feel Your nearness in the quiet moments and let Your light shine gently into the places that still hurt. Hold me close and steady my heart with Your unfailing love.
Amen.
How to Experience the Joy and Hope of Jesus this December
Joy can feel complicated during the holiday season, especially when your heart is missing someone you love. Hope may feel distant too, buried under the weight of memories and moments that bring both warmth and ache.
But Jesus meets you right where you are, in the middle of the grief, the longing, and the quiet moments that feel heavy.
If you’re unsure how to step into this season, here are five gentle ways to experience joy and hope in Jesus, even with tears in your eyes.
1. Look for One Small Joy Each Day. Joy doesn’t always come in big moments. Sometimes it’s found in a warm blanket, a soft sunrise, or a quiet moment with Jesus. Ask Him to help you notice one small gift each day and let it remind your heart that joy still exists.
2. Sit with a Christmas Worship Song. Find one worship song about Jesus’ birth that speaks to your heart and let it wash over you. Even if you tear up, let the lyrics remind you that Jesus came to be with you in your pain and to bring hope that lasts.
3. Light a Candle for Your Child. Lighting a candle in your child’s memory can be a healing way to invite Jesus into your grief. As the flame flickers, let it symbolize the light Jesus brings into even the darkest seasons.
4. Read One Verse Slowly. Choose one verse from this month’s plan and read it slowly, three or four times. Let the words settle into your heart and ask Jesus to speak His hope to you through that verse.
5. Give Yourself Permission to Feel Both Joy and Sorrow. Joy and grief can coexist. You don’t have to “choose” one. Invite Jesus into both emotions and allow His presence to hold you. He understands your tears and delights in your moments of joy.
