If you’ve ever lost a family member, you know how deep the grief runs. Every part of you is affected:

  • Your mind
  • Your emotions
  • Your body
  • Your decisions
  • Your relationships

When I lost Sam, I had never felt a pain like that before.

The only way I’ve been able to make it through is the strength of Jesus.

However, there were some practical things that I found really helped me along my healing process during my time of grief.

Essential oils was one of those ways.

The use of pure essential oils is a great way to use natural solutions to help you get through those times of deep sadness.

During those times when the thought of just getting through everyday life seems impossible.

How Essential Oils Work

Essential oils provide a great way to get through the grieving process and all of the emotional pain that comes with it.

But how do essential oils work?

Let’s first start with what essential oils are.

Essential oils are extracted from plants through a process of steaming and pressing parts of the plant to produce the oil.

So basically, you take a plant and apply steam and pressure until all the oil comes out of the plant.

As you can guess, it takes A LOT of plants to come up with one bottle of essential oil.

But how exactly do essential oils cause changes in our bodies and minds?

According to healthline.com:

“Inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviors, sense of smell, and long-term memory.

Interestingly, the limbic system is heavily involved in forming memories. This can partly explain why familiar smells can trigger memories or emotions.

The limbic system also plays a role in controlling several unconscious physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. As such, some people claim that essential oils can exert a physical effect on your body.”

It’s so cool how God made our bodies to be affected by smell like that!

Where to purchase essential oils?

When looking for essential oils it’s so important to find a good quality oil.

Not all oils are created the same!

The oils you can buy at a grocery store or the drug store are mostly fragrance and have very little essential oils actually in it.

If you’re looking to use essential oils for medicinal reasons (and not just deodorizing reasons), then you need to make sure you get a high quality oil!

I started using essential oils in 2015 using a popular essential oil direct sale company. However, I had such a hard time affording the cost of those oils.

And then my world was forever changed by the discovery of Plant Therapy.

Every oil that Plant Therapy sells is evaluated by Robert Tisserand, a leader in aromatherapy. Tisserand has been evaluating essential oils professionally for over 40 years!

Not only are their oils high quality, they are SUPER affordable!

That was music to this on-a-budget mama’s ears!

AND – it wasn’t a direct sales company so I didn’t have to sign up for anything or be pressured into selling anything.

I was used to paying $30-50 per oil. Plant Therapy’s prices are a third of that, if not less!

They are the only oils I recommend and have been personally using since 2016!

Where do you apply essential oils for grief?

Warning: Always keep your essential oils out of the reach of children.

Each essential oil has a unique and specific way it can be used. There is not one universal way to use all oils.

It’s important to do your research and know that you’re using essential oils safely.

Thankfully, Plant Therapy has directions for each oil they sell so you can be confident in knowing you’re using each oil safely.

Another great thing about Plant Therapy is they will tell you if an oil is safe to use on or around kids or if you’re pregnant.

They also have an entire Kids Safe essential oil line!

That being said, these are the two most common ways to use your essential oils.

Topical Use

You can apply essential oils topically to your skin.

It’s important to always use a carrier oil when applying to your skin. Never use an oil directly on your skin.

My favorite carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil. (I also buy my oil from Plant Therapy.)

You can do this one of two ways:

  1. You can put some fractionated coconut oil on your hands and then add a drop of essential oil to the oil and rub on your body as directed.
  2. Use a roller bottle. Add the essential oils to the roller bottle and then top with the coconut oil. This is my preferred way as it’s easier and much less messy.

It’s also important to note that each oil needs to be diluted to a certain percentage. Again, Plant Therapy is very good at telling you how to mix your oils.

They also have roller bottles already created for you for each oil, so if the thought of mixing your own up sounds like too much or is just too confusing, then you can buy their premade roller bottles!

Diffuse

One of my favorite ways to use essential oils is to diffuse the oils. I love the way it fills my room with the amazing scents.

It not only makes my room and house smell amazing, but it also has medicinal properties to it!

Also I can rest knowing that the air in my house isn’t being filled with chemicals!

Diffuser blends for Grief

You can mix different essential oils in your diffuser (or in your roller bottle).

I got both my diffuser and roller bottles from Amazon.

I love doing this for deodorizing benefits. Instead of lighting a candle, I mix oils to create a pleasant blend that fills the air.

Side note: One of my favorite blends to use for deodorizing purposes is called Holiday Season and comes out around Christmas time.

But you can also do this for medicinal reasons – in this case, grief.

Plant Therapy has some amazing blends already created for you. I’ve listed some above. But if you have single oils, you can create your own blends.

Here are some blend options to put in your diffuser:

  • 3 drops of Bergamot
  • 2 drops of Lavender
  • 2 drops of Frankincense
  • 1 drop of Cypress

  • 3 drops of Sandalwood
  • 2 drops of Rose

  • 1 drop of Lavender
  • 2 drops of Chamomile

  • 2 drops of Bergamot
  • 1 drop of Ylang Ylang

  • 2 drops Cypress
  • 2 drops orange
  • 1 drop Patchouli

Whew!

I know that was a lot of information, but I’m excited to share with you the amazing benefits of these wonderful oils that God created!
