Grief has a way of making everything feel final. Like joy, peace, and even purpose are gone forever. As a grieving mom, the weight of what we have to carry can feel so heavy, and the thought of hope or renewal might seem unachievable.

But in the quiet moments, when the world slows down and our hearts turn toward heaven, there is a whisper of truth that remains:

God has not left us here without hope.

In this post, we’ll gently explore what hope and renewal can look like in the midst of deep grief. And I’ll give you 5 practical steps you can take in your healing without feeling like you’re leaving your child behind.

Whether you’re just starting your grief journey or you’ve been carrying this pain for a while, my prayer is that this post will remind you that you are not alone – and that even here in your grief, you can find hope.

Renewal after loss doesn’t mean starting over or pretending everything is okay. It means allowing God to breathe life into the broken places of your heart.

That is one thing I learned after losing Sam, is that God is so close to you while you’re walking out this grief journey.

Renewal in grief is not about forgetting your child or moving on – it’s about learning to live again. Giving yourself permission to carry both the deep love you have for your child and the grief that comes with them not being here.

When we think about the word “renewal,” it can sound like something bright and full of energy. But in grief, renewal is slow. It’s quiet.

It’s not the big leaps, but the small steps, day by day, leaning into Jesus as He gently rebuilds the pieces of your life.

As Isaiah 43:19 reminds us, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” Even if you can’t see it yet, God is already at work – bringing hope, healing, and new beginnings, one step at a time.

Practical Ways to Embrace Hope and Renewal

Grief can make everything feel heavy, even the smallest decisions. That’s why embracing hope and renewal doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. It’s okay to start with little steps. Ones that gently lead your heart back to life, one breath, one moment at a time.

Here are a few practical ways to begin:

1. Spend Time in Scripture

Let God’s Word speak into your pain. Look for verses that remind you of His nearness, His comfort, and His faithfulness. You don’t have to do a full Bible study – just one verse a day can begin to shift your heart toward hope.

If you’re not sure where to start, I’ve created a free 31-day Scripture Calendar on Hope and Renewal to guide you through daily verses that speak life, comfort, and healing into your grief. You can download it here.

2. Create a New Rhythm

Grief disrupts life in every way. Gently creating a new rhythm can help you find stability and peace again. It might be as simple as morning prayer time, a daily walk, or setting aside five quiet minutes with a cup of tea to just be – no pressure to fix or do, just a moment to breathe and let God meet you there.

3. Journal Your Journey

Writing can be a safe place to pour out your sorrow, your questions, your prayers – and even your glimpses of gratitude. You might write letters to your child, document small moments of peace, or just let your heart spill out. It’s always amazing to me how much God would speak to me during these moments of journaling in my grief journey.

4. Connect with Others Who Understand

You don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s following a blog, reading another mom’s story, or listening to a podcast, there’s comfort in knowing you’re not the only one feeling this way. Quiet connection (without pressure) can remind you that your pain is seen and your story matters.

5. Celebrate Your Child’s Life in New Ways

Hope and grief can live side by side. Finding a new way to honor your child can be healing. This might be planting a flower in their memory, starting a small tradition on their birthday, or doing something kind for someone else in their name. These small acts can become sacred spaces of renewal. Here are 5 ways to honor your child after they go to Heaven.

Grief doesn’t disappear with time, and it doesn’t mean you stop loving or remembering your child. But even in the deepest sorrow, God invites you into a journey of renewal – not to erase the pain, but to walk with you through it.

Hope may feel fragile right now, but it is possible. And as you take even the smallest steps toward healing, you’ll begin to see that God is still working, still present, and still faithful.

Take one small step this week that symbolizes renewal in your life. That can be spending time with one scripture from my free scripture calendar, going for a walk outside, or simply whispering a prayer when you wake up. You don’t have to do it all. Just one step forward, with Jesus, is enough.

Closing Prayer:

God, thank you that you are close to the brokenhearted. You see every tear, every heartache, every longing in a grieving mother’s heart. I pray for the mom reading this right now – that you would wrap your arms around her and gently lead her into a place of hope and renewal. Give her the courage to take one small step forward, even when it feels hard. Help her trust that you are not finished with her story, and that You are still bringing beauty, even in the brokenness. Amen.
