Peace in your grief. Is it even possible? After you lose your child there are many emotions that you will feel. But can peace be one of them? Yes it can – and I’ll show you how.

Peace in Your Grief
This life can be so hard sometimes. As we know, we have walked through some hard times, and peace doesn’t seem like something that we could have while walking through losing our child. But that is something that God has promised. That He will give us peace that passes all understanding.
Peace that doesn’t make sense.
In this post, we’re going to dive into this peace. God’s peace over your mind, over your heart, over your life.
I also have some Bible verses that you can read and claim over your heart (including a free printable of these verses for you). If your heart is anxious or broken, you can claim these promises that are in these scriptures, the promises of His peace.

Losing Sam was one of the hardest things that I’ve ever gone through and will ever have to go through. I know that you feel that too. Losing your child. There’s nothing harder that we will have to go through in this life.
As I look back on my journey, I fully know that the only way I have been able to make it through is Jesus. He carried me in a time when I could not even take a step. There was no way I could have walked through what I walked through without Him.
His strength, His love, His faithfulness, and His goodness are the only reasons I was able to make it through.
There are so many things that Jesus does for us throughout our grief journey. The one thing I want to hone in on today and talk about is His peace.
The thing about feeling grief, pain, and sadness as deep as we have felt it after losing our child is that when we feel His peace, we really feel it. Since it’s the opposite emotion of what we’re currently feeling, when it comes…we can tell.
The Peace That Doesn’t Make Sense
There are a few moments in my own grief journey where I felt that peace, and it was very apparent that His peace was being poured out over my heart and my mind.
One of those moments was the first time I walked back into our house after we lost Sam. I went to his bedroom, hugged his pillow, and just lost it.
I talk a lot about drowning in your grief and how we have our lifesaver verse to help pull us out of that place.
This was one of those moments where, if I didn’t have Jesus to call out to, I would have drowned. In that moment, I could feel myself falling into a pit. It’s the only way I know how to explain it. It was like the grief was swallowing me up. The pain and sadness were too much, and I could feel myself suffocating under the weight of it.
As I felt myself losing control to the grief, pain, and sadness, the only thing I did was say:
“Jesus, help me. Jesus, take it from me.”
That’s all I did. I just asked Him to help me and take it from me. I didn’t say a long prayer, quote scripture, or do anything else. All I did was ask for His help.
And what happened next, I will never forget.
I was hysterically sobbing in my pain and grief, and then, slowly, I felt His peace being poured out on me – from the top of my head all the way down. Slowly, my sobs began to subside. I started being able to take deep breaths.
Before I knew it, that heaviness, pain, and burden were lifted off of me. His peace covered my mind and heart until I was breathing normally again and able to get up out of Sam’s bed and walk into another room.
There is NO.WAY. I could have done that on my own strength. That pain, grief, and sadness were too heavy. There’s no way I could have lifted that off of myself and then received peace.
That, my friends, is the peace that passes understanding – or, as I like to say, the peace that doesn’t make sense. I shouldn’t have had peace in a situation like that, but that’s what He gave me. All I did was call out to Him and ask Him to help me, and He was there.
That’s just one of many stories throughout my journey where Jesus has shown up in my grief and pain with His peace.

Peace in the Middle of the Storm
The grief we experience after losing our child changes us. It takes the emotions we used to feel and turns them completely upside down, leaving us with emotions we may have never felt before.
I like to use the analogy of a storm to describe these moments. Think of the last time you were in a really bad storm. The wind was howling, the rain was pouring, the thunder was loud, and the lightning was lighting up the sky.
If you’ve ever been in your car during one of these storms, you know that you can’t even see in front of you. There have been times when I’ve had to pull over and stop driving because the rain was so heavy that I couldn’t see. It was so loud I couldn’t hear.
One word you would not use to describe a storm like this is quiet or calm.
When a storm hits our lives, like what we’ve had to go through, that’s exactly what it feels like. Loud and chaotic and messy and full of darkness.
When I lost Sam, it was like everything in my life was obliterated.
When the dust settled after I lost Sam, I looked up and all around me was debris. This debris was my life. The moment I lost Sam, everything was destroyed. But as I was looking around, I saw someone. Someone standing there looking at me. Do you know who was there?
Jesus.
He was looking at me with love in His eyes, holding His hand out, ready to walk this very hard journey with me. And one of the things He gave me in the middle of my storm was peace.
Two Types of Peace
There are two types of peace that you can experience in this life: temporary peace and lasting peace.
Temporary peace is the peace that you can get from the things of this world. That peace, while you may feel it for a little while, will eventually go away. It does not last.
Having to go through what we’ve been through, we need a peace that is going to last and be with us every single moment of our life. From the moment we lost our child to the moment we see them again. That lasting peace can only be found in one place: through Jesus.
It’s the peace that hangs in there through all the ups and downs of our grief journey. The peace that sticks with us when we feel like we’re drowning. We can have the confidence that His peace will be with us every moment.
There’s a worship song called Yes and Amen, and part of the song says:
“I will rest in Your promises. My confidence is Your faithfulness.”
So we can be confident that Jesus’ peace will always be there because He is faithful, because He is always there. And if He is always there in every moment of our life, then we can have confidence that His peace will be there when we need it.
Where Do You Find This Peace
Okay, so we’ve talked a little bit about what peace is and the kind of peace that we need in our grief journey. So, where do we find this peace? We find it in Jesus. But there are places where we can actually find these promises of peace, and it’s in a place that is constant and never changes. You probably know what it is: the Bible.
God’s Word is the ultimate source of truth. It’s something that we can confidently build our lives on, knowing that not only is it constant and never changes, but it is the Word of God, which is full of power.
One of the promises inside the Bible that we can claim is the promise of peace.
Not the world’s peace. Not the peace that goes away.
It’s the peace that lasts. A peace that will take all of the hurt, the pain, and the grief and replace it with a peace that will wash over our hearts and minds.
There was a movie that came out in the ’90s called Twister. It was about storm chasers who chased tornadoes, and I remember watching this movie back then in disbelief that there were actually people who would drive toward a tornado and not away from it.
There was one time in the movie where the tornado changed directions and started coming toward them. They couldn’t get away from the tornado fast enough, so they found a pipe that went all the way underground. They knew this pipe would stay even when the tornado passed over it.
So, they chained themselves to this pipe, and the tornado passed over them. When it did, it was utter chaos. It was loud, and the wind was blowing – it was deafening.
Then, as the tornado passed over them and they entered the center of the tornado, all the wind died down. The ear-piercing noise went away, and there was complete and utter peace.
That is the peace that we get from Jesus. It’s the peace that, even though the storm is raging around us, we are sitting in the center, resting in His peace. The peace that doesn’t make sense. It’s a peace that we can have and a peace that we can claim.
