Stepping out in faith and doing something that God has called you to do can be so scary. You don’t know how it’s going to turn out. Are you going to fall on your face? Are you going to fail? Here’s a story of a time when God called me to step out in faith, what happened, and some encouragement for you!

Stepping Out in Faith
You know that feeling when you know God is telling you to do something, but you keep either rationalizing your way out of it or just completely ignoring it? But every time you rationalize it away or you ignore it, the Holy Spirit keeps bringing it back up in your mind over and over and over again.
Until finally you’re like, Okay fine, I’ll listen. I’ll do it.
That was recently something that happened to me. I knew God was telling me to do something and it scared me so bad. So I kept rationalizing my way out of it.
Because you see, what God was asking me to do would directly affect the income that was coming in through my job. And when you start talking about taking income out of your life, it can bring all sorts of fear to the surface.
How am I going to pay bills? We depend on this money. If I take this step of faith, which I believe you’re telling me to do, how is it going to work out?
Let me tell you my story. What God was asking me to do, what ended up happening, and some encouragement for you if you’re feeling like God is telling you to take a step of faith in your own life.

Having trouble stepping out in faith
I’m a virtual assistant. I have been doing this since 2019 and I have multiple clients in my case load. However, about 80% of my income was tied up with this one client.
I had been feeling for a while that I needed to let this client go for multiple reasons and the Holy Spirit kept telling me this. So I would be like okay, I’m going to do it. But every time I would think about putting my notice in, I would get scared.
“But God, that’s the majority of my income. If I let this client go, what if I can’t find another client to replace the lost income?”
So the first thing I started doing was looking for another client to replace my current one. I was thinking, the logical thing would be to find a new client and then I can put my notice in and everything would seamlessly work out.
However, I could never find anything. None of the doors I was knocking on were opening. And again, I felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit to take that step and put my notice in.
But I was so scared to take that step.
This went on for a few weeks, this back and forth conversation between me and God. Him telling me what I knew I needed to do, and then me rationalizing my way out of it – listening to my fear over my faith.
“Do you trust me?”
You see, I don’t like change and God knows this about me. So he very patiently kept nudging my heart. I know he was saying, “Courtney, do you trust me in every single area of your life?”
When thinking about the answer to that question, of course I trust him. Losing Sam deepened my trust in God even greater than it was before because he saw me through the greatest storm that I will ever have to walk through. He was there for me every moment. He healed my heart piece by piece. Of course I trust him.
But when you’re in the middle of it and you’re having to make that decision, it can be so hard (especially when you don’t know how it’s going to work out).
However, a lot of the time until you take that step of faith you won’t know how it’s going to work out. It’s the act of obedience and trust in him that we have to do first and then we’ll see.
Why is taking a step of faith important
When we take a step of faith not knowing how it’s going to work out, but we take it because we trust in him, the story that comes with that step is always so amazing!
If we know it’s all going to work out, then that’s an easy step. It doesn’t take any faith to make that decision. But sometimes God just wants to see…
Do you trust me enough to take this step? Don’t you know that I’m right here? I’m not going to let you fall. And when you take that step just wait to see what I have in store for you.
Finally taking that step of faith
I finally stepped out and put my notice in.
Was I about to lose 80% of my income? Yes.
Did I have another client lined up? No
Was I terrified out of my mind? Absolutely.
But I trusted him. I knew he would pull through. I just didn’t know how. Turns out, I didn’t have to wait long to find out.
Four days after I put my notice in, God set me up with another client.
FOUR DAYS.
But not only was this just another client, this was a dream client of mine.
So God not only replaced the work I lost hour for hour and dollar for dollar, but he replaced it with something 10 times better than what I gave up.
If this is you. If you’re in a place where you can feel God asking you to do something, but it terrifies you because you don’t know how it’s going to work out. I want to encourage you to take that step of faith. Take that step and just see how God will work it out in your life.
One of my former pastors used to say, if it excites you and terrifies you all at the same time – it’s God.

So if the thought of doing whatever it is that he’s asking you to do excites you, but scares you out of your mind, then that’s a good indicator that it’s him telling you to do it.
When you don’t know how it’s going to turn out, it can be hard to take that step. But I want to encourage you with my story that when you take that step of faith in complete and total trust in God, just see what he’ll do with your obedience!
What’s one thing that you can do with this story?
As you’ve been reading, the Holy Spirit may have been nudging your heart and bringing one thing that he’s been asking you to do into your mind. If this is you, here’s what I want you to do:
1. Remember
Remember all the times that God has been there for you. All the times that he’s seen you through hard situations.
Let those times in the past build your trust in him. Bring it back into the forefront of your mind and let that be an encouragement to you that if he was there for you before, he’s still there.
2. Just do it.
Sometimes we just have to take that step, even if we’re scared out of our mind when we do it!
Because what’s waiting on the other side is going to blow your mind.
But we have to play a part in this story. We have to be willing to listen, obey, and take that step of faith before God can move. But oh man, what a story you’ll have on the other side!

Found you on Pinterest… I’m the youngest in my family and God told me I have to be the leader. I don’t want to be the leader. But, I’m the only one He chose so far. (As far as I know) I’m so terrified, I cry. I’ve researched all I can on the subject. God brought me through two hurricanes at home. I lost the love of my life five years ago and I continue to grieve and grow through the pain. There’s no one to talk to; in time, there will be. I learned a lot about what you said and I will be obedient to God and fervent in prayer 🙏. Thank you, Sara
Sara, thank you for sharing your heart. I can only imagine how heavy it feels to carry that kind of calling while still grieving such deep loss. I just want to encourage you that God never calls us without also equipping us. You don’t have to have it all figured out! Just keep leaning into Him day by day. He sees you, and He’ll bring the right people alongside you in His timing. Praying you feel His peace and courage as you keep stepping forward 🫶
