The Power of God’s Love

My God in his steadfast love will meet me.

Psalm 59:10

There’s one thing I learned after losing Sam about God. Something I knew before, but really experienced after we walked through our storm.

God is faithful.
His strength is never-ending.
His love is steadfast.

And when you’re hit with a storm that completely wipes everything away from you, you need something in your life that’s steadfast. Something that’s unchanging. Something that’s strong and firm when everything else around you is falling apart.

What does the Bible say about God’s love?

There are different types of love.

When I say “I love donuts”, that’s a different type of love then when I say “I love my husband”. While they’re both forms of love, they’re not experienced with the same depth and emotion.

While you’re going through a trial (and healing afterwards), you get to experience the love of God in a different depth than you did before the trial.

You learn to lean on Him in a way you simply didn’t have to when everything was going good.

I wonder if that’s why James said “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters whenever you face trials of many kinds”? Because James knew something. He knew that when we go through hard times, our reliance and awareness of God and his strength deepens.

Our dependence on his love and faithfulness grows.

According to the Bible, this love that is strong enough to mend every piece of your shattered hearts, will never be taken away from you.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39

Nothing can take God’s love away from you.

NOTHING.

Not the death of a loved one. Not the loss of a job or a relationship. Not a diagnosis.

Nothing.

To read more verses about God’s love, go here.

Why is God’s love important?

Without the strength of God’s love, we never would have been able to make it without our Sam. We still wouldn’t be able to make it without Jesus. Years later, there are still moments of grief that overtake me that I have to call out for Jesus to rescue me.

And just like the verse at the beginning of the post, my God in his steadfast love will meet me.

Every. single. time.

There has never been a time that I’ve called out to God and he hasn’t answered me.
There has never been a time that I’ve called out to God to rescue me and he’s left me to drown.

Steadfast Love.

The dictionary defines steadfast as resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering.

Unwavering.

When you’re hit with a storm in your life as strong as we had to walk through, unwavering is literally a lifesaver.

And that my friends is why it’s important to know God BEFORE the storm hits. Like, really know him.

Not just know of him.
Or know what he’s done for someone else.
Or know what he looks like on Sunday mornings on a stage.

Know him. Know his personality. Know how good he is. Know how faithful he is.

Because when a storm hits, it’s that knowledge that you can fall back on. That’s the knowledge that your foundation will be built on. And on that foundation you’ll be able to make it to see the sun rise on the other side of the darkness of your storm.

How does God show his love?

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

The very thing that the enemy meant to destroy us, is the very thing that God sent to save us.

Death.

The death of one man brought hope to everyone. And hope is a powerful thing when you’re having to face death.

When I got in the car that night at the hospital and had to drive away from my baby, knowing that was the last time I would see him.
When I watched them lower his body into the ground.
When I watched them heap piles of dirt on top of my baby.

In those moments, what Jesus did for me became extremely clear. Jesus’ death gave me something that in those moments was a lifeline. His death brought me hope that I WILL see my baby again. That when I drove away it wasn’t goodbye, just “see you later”.

God’s love was willing to give up his Son, so that I could live forever with mine.

My Challenge to You

So my sweet friends, this is the challenge I give to you today.

Today. When the sun is shining. When everything is going good.

Get to know God. Spend time with him. Get to know his character. Know his goodness and his faithfulness. Feel his love.

This revelation, this foundation, will literally save your life when a storm comes your way.

Are you going through a storm right now and need some prayers? Please send me a message so I can encourage you and lift you up to the One who holds all hope.
