We all know the importance of God’s word. Reading the Bible, studying the Bible, and spending time with Him are very important in our Christian faith. But why? Why is God’s word so powerful?
Here’s how I used God’s word in a hard situation – and how you can use the same power to help you in hard situations.

Why God’s Word is so Powerful
We’re no strangers to hard situations in our grief journey.
My Lifesaver verse has seen me through so many hard situations through the past seven years since losing Sam. However, this last time that I had to use it was a little bit different. It wasn’t tied to my grief or Sam, but it still helped me. It helped me have peace in a kind of stressful situation.
Having your lifesaver verse ready can help you not only in your grief journey, but also in any other hard situation that might be stressful or difficult to go through.
In this post, I’ll share my story with you and then we’ll go into why God’s word is so powerful. Why does His word work the way it does? Lastly, I’m going to give you three steps of how you can use your lifesaver verse in your life when hard situations come up.

The Time my Lifesaver Verse Brought Me Peace
I had to have a root canal and I was extremely nervous about it. I think it’s mainly because I’d never had one done before, and I didn’t know what to expect. There’s a lot of nervousness that comes with just not knowing.
I got to the office and they took me back to my room. They gave me the shot to numb my mouth, and then they left me there to let the numbing start working.
As I was sitting there, my heart started racing. I started feeling claustrophobic. I couldn’t swallow because the taste of the numbing cream they put in my mouth made it taste gross, and I felt like I was choking and couldn’t breathe.
It was awful. I was like, “God, you have to help me here. I’m really struggling. I don’t want to freak out, and I need my heart to calm down.”
And what happened next is exactly what I tell you all the time here on the blog – the Holy Spirit will bring your lifesaver verse up in your mind exactly when you need it.
I didn’t go into this situation thinking that I would need my verse. I was just thinking, “It’s a dental procedure.” I always equated my lifesaver verse with Sam and the hard times that I have to go through related to him.
So, when I went into this dental procedure, I didn’t think I was going to need to have my Bible verse ready.
But as I was sitting there and thinking, “God, you’re going to have to help me. I need to calm down,” the Holy Spirit brought the verse back up in my mind because He knew that’s exactly what I needed.
I started repeating my verse over and over again, and y’all, I promise, when I started doing that, my heart rate started slowing down, and I felt his peace. Now, it wasn’t instant, but as I kept repeating it over and over, all that anxiety, all that nervousness, and anxiousness started going away. And he replaced it with His peace.
Until my heart started beating normally. That anxious, claustrophobic feeling was gone. And I was able to get the procedure done with peace.
If I started feeling nervous again, I just repeated the verse throughout the procedure.
It was so amazing to me to see the power of God’s word in my life in that moment – to take my anxiety away, take my stress away, and give me peace in a situation where I didn’t think I would need it.
That’s why it’s so important to have it ready, so the Holy Spirit can bring it into your mind when you need it. You can use it as a weapon against whatever is going on. Your anxiety, your fear, your grief, your brokenness – whatever you’re going through.
God’s word is powerful enough to meet you there and help you get through it. God’s word works.

Why is God’s Word Powerful
But why? Why does God’s word work the way it does? Why is God’s word so powerful against all these things we have to go through? That’s the first thing I want to talk about before I get into the three steps of how you can use this in your own life.
I have four things I want to bring to you about why God’s word is so powerful.
1. The Bible is Not MAN’S Words
The Bible is filled with direct words from God himself.
2 Timothy 3:16 says, “All scripture is God-breathed.”
As Christians, that’s what we believe. We believe that this Bible we read, these words, are not merely just words in a book.
You can go to the library and see all the books that man has written. And there are some really good books that entertain us, inspire us, motivate us, and teach us. Those are all amazing things.
But this book, the Bible, wasn’t simply written by man. The men who wrote the Bible were inspired by God. God used men to write, but they were writing His words. How powerful is that? We have words that are direct from God himself.
2. His Word is Alive
God’s word is alive. It’s living.
Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active.”
Have you ever read something in the Bible during one season of your life and got something from it, and then read the same exact verse in a different season and got something completely different?
That’s because His word is alive. It’s constantly relevant to whatever season of life you’re in, whatever you’re struggling with.
It will meet you where you’re at. You can read the same verse ten times and get ten different things out of it. There are so many layers to His word, and I believe that’s because it’s alive. It’s active. It’s not just words on a page.
3. His Word is Truth That Never Changes
Matthew 24:35 says, “Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”
His words will not pass away. They will remain. The truth that’s in this Bible will remain constant and will never pass away. It is a constant that we can build our life on.
This word that we have is a foundation for us. If you’re building your life on what’s going on in the world you will not be able to stand because this world is constantly changing. It’s good, everything’s going great. And then it’s bad. It’s up and down, up and down.
But God’s word is something we can build our life confidently on because we know that no matter what is going on in the world, we’re okay. We have this word to build our life on, to stand confidently on, and it will never change.

4. His Word Will Accomplish What It’s Sent Out To Do
Isaiah 55:11 says, “So is my word that goes out from my mouth. It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
Your words are powerful, especially when you’re speaking the word of God. When I was sitting in that dentist chair, filled with anxiety and nervousness, and my heart was racing, when I spoke those words from my lifesaver verse, the promise in that verse went out. When it came back to me, it did not come back empty. It came back to me with that promise fulfilled.
When we speak our verse, we can do so with confidence, knowing that when it goes out, it’s not going to return void. It’s not going to come back empty.
The promise in those verses that we’re speaking out loud will accomplish what God wants them to accomplish.
So, how do you use this in your life? In your journey, when hard situations come up – whether related to your child or not. How do you use it? How can you make this work?
I have three steps for you that I want you to go through. After you do these three steps, you will be armed with a verse that you can use in hard situations.
Step One: Pick Out Your “Lifesaver Verse”
Step one is you need to pick your verse. I suggest just one verse – we’re going to keep it simple. There are so many good ones that you can use that will apply to different situations in your life.
If you’re not sure what a lifesaver verse is, let me explain. There’s a reason they call it waves of grief, because that’s how it comes. It comes in waves. You’ll be okay one minute, and then a wave of grief will hit you and knock you off your feet.
A lifesaver verse is something that you can hold on to when that wave of grief hits. It’s like the buoy that lifeguards throw out to someone who is drowning for them to hold onto. It literally keeps their head above the water and keeps them from drowning.
That’s what this verse is. When the waves of grief hit you, it will keep your head above water and keep you from drowning.
If you’re unsure what your verse could be, I have a free download for you. It lists a bunch of different Bible verses that you could use for your lifesaver verse. Download this, read through the verses and see which one sticks out to you. That’s your verse.

Step Two: Memorize Your Verse
I know that memorizing anything is a hard thing to think about, especially in your grief, but I believe it’s very important. You need to know your verse for those situations that come unexpectedly, like my dental procedure.
Or if you’re out and about and a wave of grief hits you, and you don’t have your Bible handy or your phone to look it up, it’s just easier to use if it’s memorized.
If it’s in your heart, then the Holy Spirit can bring it back into your mind exactly when you need it.
Here are some tips for memorizing your verse:
Read it over and over and over again.
As you’re reading it, you will begin to memorize it. It’ll get into your heart, and the Holy Spirit can bring it up into your mind when you need it.
Write it on sticky notes
You can also write it on sticky notes and put it everywhere. On your bathroom mirror, at your desk at work, in your car, above the kitchen sink. Every time you see it, just read it over and over. That repetition of seeing it, reading it, and saying it will help you memorize it.
Set it as the background on your phone or computer
You can also set it as the background on your phone or computer, so every time you open up your device, you’ll see that verse. And when you see it, you guessed it – read it over and over again. Read it out loud, say it over and over, and you will memorize it.
This is just a side note, and I’m going to tell you my lifesaver verse to prove this point. Where the verse is found in the Bible, like 2 Timothy 3:16 for example, is not as important as the actual words. The reference, like “2 Timothy 3:16,” is for us to know where to find something quickly.
For example, if I wanted to find the verse that says, “All scripture is God-breathed,” but didn’t have the book, chapter, and verse, it would take forever to search through the entire Bible to find that specific verse. So the references were put there for our use. But the real power is in the words that God spoke.
God didn’t have Timothy write, “2 Timothy chapter 3,” and then start writing. He just wrote. The reference numbers were put in later for our use.
I don’t even know where my lifesaver verse is located right now, and I waited to tell you this to show you it’s okay.
My lifesaver verse is, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.”
That’s been my verse since I lost Sam. It’s the verse I used at the dentist office too. I repeated it over and over in my mind to have peace come into my heart, because that’s the promise in that verse: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You.”
When I spoke that out loud, it accomplished what I sent it out to do. I got perfect peace because I said that verse, and it came back to me.
Anyway, I have no idea where that verse is located exactly. I think it’s somewhere in Isaiah, but I waited to tell you this to show you that when I was in that dentist chair repeating the verse over and over, I didn’t say, “Isaiah, wherever it’s found.” I didn’t add the reference.
The power of the verse was in the actual words, not the location.
If you’re thinking, “Well, Courtney, won’t I need to know where to find it?” If you do, you can just Google it. That’s what I do. If I need to know where it’s at, I just Google the verse, and it’ll show me exactly where it’s found through Bible Gateway or another Bible website.
So when you’re memorizing your verse, don’t worry about focusing on the reference, where it’s located in the Bible. Just memorize the words because that’s where the power is.
And if you ever need to know where it’s found, just Google it.
Step Three: Use It
Okay, so now you’ve picked out your verse, and you’ve memorized it, step three is to use it. Repeat it over and over again when hard situations come up, when waves of grief hit, or when you find yourself in a situation that gives you anxiety.
If you have a hard day coming up, have that verse ready. If something unexpected happens, the Holy Spirit will bring it back to your mind.
What you’re going to do is repeat it over and over again, either out loud or in your mind, until you feel that peace come.
When I was sitting in my chair and really struggling, with my heart racing, I took my verse and said, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You. My mind is stayed on You. I trust You. You keep him in perfect peace. I have perfect peace because my mind is stayed on You. I trust You.”
I just repeated that, over and over again, until eventually, my heartbeat started slowing down and I felt that peace.
So, take your verse, memorize it, and then use it. Repeat it over and over again whenever a hard situation comes up, whether it’s tied to your child or not.
I know it will be so, so helpful for you in those hard moments throughout your grief journey.
